Philips extends its partnership with FIFA as a global sponsor of the World Cup Football Finals

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, August 1, 2001 - On behalf of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) Gerard Kleisterlee, President and Chief Executive Officer and FIFA president Joseph Blatter today signed the contract that Philips will be an official partner of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan (TM).

The full scope of today’s agreement between Philips and FIFA also includes sponsorship of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2003 in the People’s Republic of China.

Philips' partnership with football, and FIFA, has been and will be very important for global exposure and marketing of the Philips brand. "Football is the world’s most popular sport and has been at the center of Philips’ sponsorship strategy and investments for many years. Becoming a worldwide sponsor of the 2002 World Cup further strengthens our position in football on a global basis," said Gerard Kleisterlee. "Our involvement in football sponsorship is based on the soccer pyramid. We sponsor a whole range of football activities, from local teams and competitions right up to these most prestigious of events. Philips is associated with the games at all levels. Football provides a wonderful platform to reach our target audiences worldwide."

For the 2002 World Cup, Philips, in cooperation with FIFA, will provide a portfolio of products and services that demonstrate its leading role in lighting and information and communication technologies. "Philips has been a longtime FIFA partner and continues to demonstrate commitment to football at the local, regional and global level," said FIFA President Joseph Blatter. "The 2002 World Cup is a milestone in the history of football championships and we are thrilled to have Philips be a part of this global event."

As an official partner of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, Philips receives two on-field advertising boards in each of the 20 stadiums where the 64 World Cup matches will take place and will have exclusive use of the World Cup marks and emblems on Philips packaging and collateral. As a supplemental program to reinforce Philips’ commitment to football, Philips will also develop football-related advertising and promotional activities.
